As a mom, I wasn’t prepared for how I would go from a completely confident working woman to an unsure and unhappy stay at home mom. I knew there was something more to this identity as a mom and was losing it as the diapers piled up and the tantrums began. The funny thing is is that I am a licensed professional counselor. I know the warning signs, I know when it is time to ask for help, but when you become a mom, your sense of up and down gets skewed, doesn’t it?
When we get to that place where we can’t see straight anymore it is time to ask for help. The problem can be when we know we need the help but are unsure from whom. So, let’s start with the basics:
It is always important to have a check up with your primary care doctor. You want to make sure that you do not have a vitamin deficiency or thyroid issues that are impacting your mood and wellbeing.
If you find yourself struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety, then going to a counselor or psychologist is important. Finding the right fit is so much easier now a days with sites like www.psychologytoday.com. You can read profiles of counselors and decide who seems like the right fit. Go with your gut and if your first meeting doesn’t go well try a different counselor. It is worth it to find the right counselor for you.
If you find yourself struggling with drive, passion, and motivation, then finding a coach is a huge help! They are there to work with you through mental battles and push past barriers that keep you from achieving your goals. Searching online and asking for recommendations from friends is a great idea. Most coaches have blogs or Instagram pages for you to follow so it is easier now than ever to find a coach that matches your life mission.
Asking for help isn’t easy, but it can be even more overwhelming to figure out where to find what you need. The internet can be your friend and help you find the right doctor, counselor, or coach for you. Getting recommendations from friends is a great way to locate the right fit as well. My biggest piece of advice is to not give up when looking for the help and support you need. You are worth it so don’t give up! Becoming a better and healthier version of yourself takes steps forward. Make your first step finding the right person to walk beside you as you navigate this road of motherhood. It pays off in the end!
